Please join us for a day of paper fun, learning how to create beautiful notebooks by hand!
In this sampler-style bookbinding workshop led by Carolyn Eady of Sprouts Press, students will learn the tools of the trade with easy, softcover bookbinding techniques to create unique, handmade books. Everyone will leave with three finished notebooks, made by (their own!) hand.
Carolyn will share several of the techniques she uses in a class suitable for beginners. Students will create three notebooks using different binding styles and paper selections. If you have take one of our sampler workshops with Carolyn before, in this workshop she will be teaching a set of completely new binding styles. These handcrafted notebooks can be used as sketchbooks, diaries, travel journals, or as a special place to gather your thoughts.
Please note that sharp tools are used in this class, making it unsuitable for children.
What to bring
All tools and materials will be provided (all fees included). Handmade books make beautiful gifts, and are sure to be treasured. If you fall in love with bookbinding at this workshop, you can apply your new skills at home by creating your own kit using the tool list that Carolyn provides.
If you require glasses to see small details, please be sure to bring them. As this workshop is four hours in length with a small break in between, please feel free to bring a lunch or snack.
Techniques covered
Students will learn three softcover binding variations, developed personally by Carolyn. Carolyn will go over the advantages of each of the bindings from a learning perspective, as well as offer tips on how to adapt these for your own work at home.
The bindings you will learn in this workshop are:
• Stab Binding (this is a different Stab Binding than was taught in Bookbinding Sampler Vol. 1)
• 2 Signature Binding
• Variation on the Pamphlet Binding
**In an effort to make the space comfortable for everyone, please avoid the use of perfumes and fragrances.
Bonus: on the day of the workshop, participants will get 10% off all regularly-priced merchandise in our studio-shop.

More about Carolyn Eady and Sprouts Press
Carolyn Eady, the owner and artist behind Sprouts Press, attended OCAD intending to study drawing and painting. However, she ended up falling in love with printmaking, paper-making and book arts instead, and went on to study in Italy after receiving her BFA. Her time abroad only intensified her appreciation of the craft; shortly after, Sprouts Press was born!
At Sprouts Press, everything is made with traditional techniques by hand. Each of Carolyn's creations are as functional as they are beautiful; as the maker herself explains, "aesthetics are important, but I also really want people to express their hearts out on the pages of the books I make.”
